Introduction
In the Japanese language there are two types of adjectives: い-adjectives and な-adjectives.
In this blog post we are going to explain how い-adjectives work.
い-adjectives are called like that because they all end with a い vowel in the present tense affirmative form.
Japanese adjectives examples:
- 面白い【おもしろい】- interesting
- 赤い【あかい】- red
- 忙しい【いそがしい】- busy
Adjectives describe a noun and are called noun modifiers.
Adjectives as noun modifier:
- 面白い映画【おもしろいえいが】- interesting movie
- 赤い車【あかいくるま】- red car
- 忙しい人【いそがしいひと】- busy person
To turn the present tense affirmative い-adjective into a negative い-adjective, you replace the last い-vowel with the く-syllable and add ない after it.
Present tense negative adjective:
面白い ➝ い ➝ 【く＋ない】 ➝ 面白くない
To turn the present tense affirmative い-adjective into a past tense affirmative い-adjective, you replace the last い-vowel with the かった suffix.
Past tense affirmative adjective:
面白い ➝ い ➝ かった ➝ 面白かった
And finally, to turn the present tense affirmative い-adjective into a past tense negative い-adjective, you replace the last い-vowel with the なかった suffix.
Past tense negative adjective:
面白い ➝ い ➝ なかった ➝ 面白なかった
