Introduction

There are two different types of adjectives in the Japanese language.

Na-adjectives and i-adjectives.

In this blog post, we will introduce the Na-adjective.

Na-adjectives are also called describing words because they give us more information about the noun.

They are called na-adjectives because they all end with a na-syllable.

Na-adjectives are placed in front of a noun.

Na-adjective + Noun:

親切な + 先生 ➝ 親切先生
Kind teacher.

It is important to address that when we place a na-adjective in front of a noun, we keep the last na-syllable.

When we add a na-adjective in front of です, the na-syllable will drop.

Na-adjective + です:

山田先生 は 親切 です。
Teacher Yamada is kind.

Except for dropping the last na-syllable, na-adjectives won't change when conjugating です.

Na-adjective + です conjugation:

affirmative negative
present 親切です 親切じゃないです
past 親切でした 親切じゃなかったです
